School Library and Reading Garden

We have a cozy and beautiful library that students can enjoy during recess or at their scheduled library visit. Kids are introduced to books starting from UTK with story-time to 4th graders learning to use the digital library and the Dewey System. Ultimately, sixth graders leave here with the ability to navigate libraries independently.

Every year the library hosts the Winter Art Show and the Spring Family Literacy Night Book Cafe. There is also the spring book fair that kids always look forward to. At Rockdale, the library not only promotes book love, it builds community.

In February we celebrate Black History Month where the library features books by black authors and African American stories. There is a link with some recommended reading.

The Reading Garden is a quiet corner of the playground set aside for activities like reading. Sometimes students use the "stage" to practice dances or performances. Decorated with “The Secret Garden” mural and planted with greenery, it was created with the support from a Los Angeles Community Beautification Grant.
